During my internship at Geotab, the company hosted an Intern Challenge (essentially a hackathon) focused on developing a video telematics solution with AI and machine learning components. Although my background was in mechanical engineering, and I wasn't equipped with the necessary skills for this challenge I was determined to contribute and I spent two days watching YouTube videos on training computer vision models. Over the next five days, I created a working model, and in the final three days, my team and I polished it for presentation.
We were the only team to produce a fully functional model, and we ended up winning first place out of eleven teams. I was responsible for the code and video implementation, and we developed two computer vision models: one for in-cabin monitoring and another for front-facing object detection. I specifically trained the in-cabin model to detect distracted driving behaviors, such as adjusting the radio, drinking water, talking, and even attentive driving. My teammates then used my model to implement a driver scoring system.

Winning first place in Geotab’s 10th Intern Innovation Challenge was a highlight of my summer internship. Competing against eleven other teams, my team, developed an innovative video telematics solution, showcasing our ability to think critically, adapt quickly, and deliver impactful results.
Despite my primary background in mechanical engineering, I stepped out of my comfort zone to tackle a software-intensive project. Over the course of the challenge, I learned to build and train a computer vision model, which became a key component of our winning solution. Our team's project stood out not only because of our technical execution but also because of the seamless integration of AI and machine learning into a practical, real-world application.
Receiving this certificate of achievement symbolizes more than just winning a competition; it represents the power of teamwork, the willingness to embrace new challenges, and the ability to deliver under pressure. This experience has further solidified my commitment to pursuing a career that merges innovative design with cutting-edge technology.
